Thomas Golden, MD

Program Director
Golden Thomas, MD

Dr. Thomas Golden is the Program Director of the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Community Memorial Healthcare. He studied engineering at the U.S. Naval Academy and molecular biology at University of California, San Diego. Dr. Golden earned his medical degree from University of Virginia School of Medicine and did an internship in Family Practice at UCLA Harbor General Hospital in California. He completed a Family Practice Residency at Ventura County Medical Center and subsequently completed the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program at the San Francisco Orthopaedic Residency Program. He is certified through the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.

He is an active member of the American Association for Hip and Knee Surgeons. He possesses expertise in a wide range of Orthopaedic procedures, specializing in hip, knee, and shoulder surgery. These procedures include anterior hip replacement and robotic knee replacement, as well as minimally invasive arthroscopic surgeries of the shoulder and knee. Dr. Golden has served the medical community and his patients for more than 40 years. He has held several leadership positions at Community Memorial Hospital, including Chief of Surgery and Director of the Same Day Surgery at CMH. In 2013, the Medical Staff elected Dr. Golden as Chief of Staff for a two-year term.

Currently he serves on the Board of Trustees of CMH. Dr. Golden is an active member of our Ventura community, contributing to several charities benefiting medical research and public education. In his free time, he is an avid runner and enjoys boating, fishing, backpacking and spending time with his wife, 3 grown children, and 7 grandchildren.

Emily Benson, MD

Associate Program Director
Benson Emily, MD

Dr. Emily Benson is the Associate Program Director of the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Community Memorial Healthcare. She is an orthopedic trauma surgeon who specializes in complex long bone and peri-articular fractures. She is originally from San Antonio, Texas and completed her schooling and training in New England. She obtained her undergraduate degree at Brown University and her medical doctorate at Boston University. She completed internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts. She completed an additional orthopaedic trauma fellowship with San Diego Orthopaedic Trauma and Fracture Specialists. She serves as Director of the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at Ventura County Medical Center. She is an active member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association and served on multiple committees.

Her interests include global orthopaedics, and in 2018 she developed a non-profit organization called Viet Cal that is an orthopaedic exchange program between the United States and Vietnam. Each year she takes a team of orthopaedic surgeons and residents to remote areas of Vietnam to collaborate with local orthopaedic surgeons on challenging cases. Her hobbies include surfing, triathlons, and spending time with her family.

Petros Frousiakis, DO

Frousiakis Petros, DO

Dr. Petros Frousiakis is the Associate Program Director of the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Community Memorial Healthcare. He is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in Sports Medicine and Adult Reconstruction. He received his medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences, where he graduated with honors. Dr. Frousiakis completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Community Memorial Healthcare in Ventura, where he was recognized for his excellence in patient care and received the Outstanding Resident Award. He then pursued subspecialty fellowship training in Sports Medicine at the prestigious Southern California Orthopaedic Institute, where he was afforded the opportunity to treat professional athletes from around the globe.

With over 10 years of experience in the field, Dr. Frousiakis has a broad range of expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of various orthopaedic conditions; he is particularly interested in cartilage restoration, complex multi-ligamentous injuries, minimally invasive surgery, and robotic assisted surgery. Dr. Frousiakis is committed to staying up-to-date with the latest medical research and advancements in the field of orthopedics.

He is a member of multiple professional societies and is the author of several peer-reviewed journal articles and text book chapters. Dr. Frousiakis also serves as the Vice President of VietCal, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing orthopaedic expertise to underserved communities in Vietnam.

In his free time, Dr. Frousiakis enjoys outdoor sports, traveling, and spending time with his wife and three children.

Casey Pyle, DO

Associate Program Director
Pyle Casey, DO

Dr. Casey Pyle is the Associate Program Director of the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Community Memorial Healthcare. A former resident and member of the second graduating class of Orthopaedic Surgery at Community Memorial, his deep-rooted connection to the institution is evident in his commitment to its growth and success while preserving the tight-knit and selfless resident culture. As a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with fellowship training in foot and ankle reconstructive surgery, he is core faculty for the foot and ankle rotation, where he mentors and guides residents during their third year of training.

Outside of his professional responsibilities, he finds joy in his personal life. He cherishes the love and support of his wife, Lauren, whom he met at Community Memorial while he was a resident. They have four wonderful sons together. Balancing his passion for teaching, innovation, and patient care, Casey makes sure to have fun and enjoy his profession. He also prioritizes making time for leisure activities. Whether it's playing baseball or Mario Kart with his children, spending weekends at Carpinteria beach with his family, indulging in TV series binges with his wife, or adding to his sneaker collection, he finds fulfillment in both his professional and personal pursuits.

Rachel Goldstein, MD, MPH

Site Director, Children's Hospital of Los Angeles

Dr. Rachel Goldstein is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in pediatric orthopaedics in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Goldstein received her medical degree from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 2007. Following her medical degree, she completed her internship and orthopaedic residency at the NYU School of Medicine. She also completed additional surgical training through pediatric orthopaedic fellowships at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles and Boston Children's Hospital.

Derek Moore, MD

Site Director, Cottage Hospital

Dr. Derek Moore is a board-certified orthopaedic spine surgeon with a focus on degenerative and traumatic conditions of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. He has a special interest in chronic nerve pain and conditions of the cervical spine and sees patients at Santa Barbara Orthopedic Associates in Santa Barbara, California. Dr. Moore is the Founder and President of Orthobullets, one of the world's most popular educational resources on musculoskeletal disease for physicians and patients. Orthobullets is a physician-controlled organization with the mission to provide physicians tools to help them take better care of their patients.

Eugene Tsai, MD

Site Director, Cedars Sinai

Dr. Eugene Y. Tsai is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty training in hand and upper extremity surgery. He is the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program Director at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. His interests include trauma of the upper extremity and minimally invasive surgical techniques including endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery and arthroscopy of the hand, wrist, and elbow.

Dr. Tsai attended medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. He is a native of Southern California, attending Harvard-Westlake for high school. He went on to Northwestern University for college where he studied economics and religion. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and his hand and upper extremity surgery fellowship at the Tufts/New England Baptist Hospital Combined in Boston.

Dr. Tsai received multiple honors include being inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, receiving the Carter Makley Award for clinical excellence, resident teaching, mentorship, and leadership, being elected to the American Orthopaedic Association’s Resident Leadership Forum as well as being elected to their Emerging Leaders Program. He has also received awards for patient satisfaction. Grants he has received include a Mid-America Orthopaedic Association Education Grant and a Northwestern University Undergraduate Research Grant.

His contributions to the field include many research projects resulting in a number of articles in peer reviewed journals as well as book chapters on arthroscopy and hand surgery. His research has received awards and been presented at many conferences at the regional and national level.

Earl Brien, MD

Dr. Brien earned a bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley and a medical degree from Howard University School of Medicine, Washington, DC. He completed an internship in general surgery at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital, Columbia University, New York City, and a residency in orthopaedic surgery at King/Drew School of Medicine, Los Angeles. Thereafter he completed a fellowship in orthopaedic oncology at the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. From 1993-2004, he served as Director of Musculoskeletal Tumor Service at the Orthopaedic Hospital in Los Angeles. From 2004 – 2007 he served as Fellowship Coordinator, Sarcoma Service, John Wayne Cancer Institute / St. John Health Center, Santa Monica, CA. Since 2008, he has served as Surgical Director, Sarcoma Service at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

John Burge, DO

Dr. John Ross Burge is a subspecialty trained, hip and knee replacement surgeon who provides comprehensive care for a wide range of hip and knee conditions using cutting-edge procedures including robotic-assisted joint replacement and computer navigation joint replacement. Dr. Burge is one of a few exclusive Zimmer ROSA robot trained surgeons in Ventura County.

Sean Early, MD

Dr. Sean David Early is an orthopaedic surgeon primarily located in Ventura, California, with offices in Santa Barbara and Pismo Beach, California and two other locations. He has over 30 years of experience. His specialties include pediatric orthopedic surgery. Dr. Early is affiliated with Ventura County Medical Center.

Joshua Gluck, MD

Core Faculty

Born in Virginia, Dr. Joshua S. Gluck, MD attended the University of Virginia, where he received his undergraduate degree. He went on to graduate medical school with honors from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia and returned to the University of Virginia for a five-year orthopaedic surgery residency. During his training, Dr. Gluck was captivated by the complexity of hand and upper extremity surgery and pursued an additional 18-month fellowship focusing specifically on this subspecialty to become a hand surgeon.

Dr. Gluck’s fellowship included three months in Auckland, New Zealand performing complex hand and wrist surgeries. He then spent three months in Dallas at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, where he focused specifically on the treatment of congenital hand abnormalities in children. Dr. Gluck finished his fellowship with a year in New York City at the CV Starr Hand Surgery Center, the oldest hand fellowship in the country. His training in New York included treatment of a wide range of pathologies, from rotator cuff tears to elbow dislocations and nerve injuries in the hand. He also had the opportunity to spend time in clinic with a number of Spanish-speaking patients and has become quite proficient in medical Spanish.

Dr. Gluck specializes in hand surgery, wrist surgery, elbow surgery, shoulder surgery and pediatric upper extremity surgery. His procedures include carpal tunnel, trigger finger and De Quervain’s release, fracture fixation and arthroscopic minimally invasive surgeries of the wrist, elbow, and shoulder; and arthritis restoration and reconstructive procedures, including total shoulder and elbow replacements.

Dr. Gluck is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. He has gained experience from doctors and surgeons across the globe and is familiar with the latest surgical options but always strives to maximize non-operative treatment unless surgery is absolutely necessary. Dr. Gluck’s goal is to provide personalized, thoughtful care and treat each patient as if he or she were a family member.

Dr. Gluck and his wife followed through on their dream to move to Southern California by living in Ventura. They enjoy surfing, running, biking and hanging out with their Great Dane.

Damayea Hargett, MD

Dr. Damayea Hargett is an orthopaedic surgeon in Ventura, California and has over 15 years of experience. They graduated from Morehouse School of Medicine. They currently practice at Ventura County Orthopaedic Associates and are affiliated with Ventura County Medical Center. Dr. Hargett has experience treating a variety of conditions, including non-unions and malunions of fractures and wrist fracture.

Ashley Lamb, DO

Dr. Ashley Lamb is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Community Memorial Hospital-Ventura and Ventura County Medical Center. She received her medical degree from Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed an Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Community Memorial Healthcare. She went on to complete an Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship at the University of Southern California. Dr. Ashley Lamb has expertise in treating arthritis, among other conditions.

Michael Maguire, MD

Core Faculty

Dr. Michael F. Maguire is an experienced pediatric orthopaedic surgeon who also specializes in orthopedic trauma surgery at Maguire & Early Orthopedics, with offices in Santa Barbara and Pismo Beach, California. Dr. Maguire has extensive training in orthopaedic surgery, specifically in pediatric patients, and his special areas of interest include hip dysplasia, scoliosis, clubfoot, limb lengthening, neuromuscular disease, and pediatric trauma.

Dr. Maguire completed his undergraduate degree at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, and earned his medical degree at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He then completed orthopaedic surgery training at the University of California, San Diego, and at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. To further his training, Dr. Maguire completed a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedics at the University of Utah Primary Children’s Medical Center and at the Shriners Hospital in Salt Lake City.

Eric Shepard, MD

Core Faculty

Dr. Eric Shepherd brings his surgical acumen and extensive experience in the field of orthopedics to Santa Barbara Orthopedic Associates. Dr. Shepherd’s areas of expertise include complex orthopaedic trauma reconstruction, pelvic reconstruction, total joint replacement, arthroscopic surgery, and minimally invasive surgical techniques. He holds California licenses in fluoroscopy and x-ray supervision and was the recipient of the John Charnley Award for his study of hip replacement wear. In addition to his work with the Santa Barbara Orthopedic Associates, Dr. Shepherd is currently the Medical Director of Orthopaedic Trauma, a charter member of the Multispecialty Peer Review Committee, and chairman of the Surgical Care Improvement Plan at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Dr. Shepherd earned a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences from the University of California, Riverside, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to earn his M.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine. After a general surgery internship at the Oregon Health and Science University, he completed a research fellowship at Harbor/UCLA Medical Center and an orthopaedic surgery residency at Oregon Health and Sciences University. He then completed two orthopaedic trauma fellowships: one at University of California, Davis Medical Center, where he earned the prestigious Morris Hughes Resident Teaching Award, and the other at Auckland City Hospital in New Zealand. Born and raised in Santa Barbara, Dr. Shepherd is a fifth generation Californian and a proud Eagle scout.

Stephan Sweet, MD

Core Faculty

Dr. Stephan Sweet is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. His positive and warm bedside manner is one of his strongest attributes. Customizing his approach to match each patient’s specific needs, Dr. Sweet has an excellent track record of patient satisfaction and proven successful results.

After earning his Master’s degree in public health from Columbia University and a Medical degree from Georgetown University, he completed his orthopaedics surgery residency in Los Angeles at the University of Southern California. As he became proficient in treating a variety of orthopedic conditions throughout the body, including bone fractures and arthritic joint conditions, Dr. Sweet also developed a special interest in sports medicine.

He stayed in Los Angeles to expand on his sports-related orthopaedic training and completed a fellowship at UCLA in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery. Here Dr. Sweet gained expertise in shoulder replacement as well as in some of the most innovative orthopaedic techniques available to patients. These skills include treating shoulder, knee and hip conditions with minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures. His use of these state-of-the-art practices allows patients to return to their regular activities as quickly as possible. During his time at UCLA, he was a team physician for several of the sports teams, including football, water polo, tennis, and track.

Dr. Sweet has an impressive educational background including Emory University and the University of Pennsylvania. He has also participated in award winning orthopaedic research projects and been published in journals and a sports medicine textbook. In his free time, he enjoys movies, sports, exercising, travel and most of all spending time with his wife and daughter.

Sahil Vohra, DO

Dr. Sahil Vohra is a California native and long time resident of Southern California. He completed his undergraduate training at University of California San Diego followed by medical school at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California. He chose Ventura, California for his orthopaedic surgery residency and fell in love with the area during his five years of training. He sought additional fellowship training in hand and upper extremity surgery at the Virginia Tech Carilion Clinic and has returned to the Ventura County area to settle down in his favorite city.
