An inverted nipple points inward (toward the body) as opposed to outward. This relatively common condition can be present at birth or result from breastfeeding, aging, cancer, or breast surgery. To correct an inverted nipple, the surgeon makes a small incision at the base of the nipple and detaches some or all of the milk ducts around it, allowing the nipple to emerge.
