Community Memorial Health System Welcomes New Resident Class

Community Memorial Health System (CMHS) is proud to welcome our newest class of resident physicians to our talented team of healthcare professionals. This class of 20 men and women is comprised of both Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) and Doctors of Medicine (MD). With the addition of this class, Community Memorial Health System’s Graduate Medical Education program has become the largest program between Los Angeles and San Francisco with a total of 68 Resident Physicians.

Residency is a stage of graduate medical education that provides in-depth training within a specific branch of medicine. A resident physician holds the degree of MD or DO and practices medicine under the direct supervision of an attending physician. In most areas, successful completion of a residency program is required to sit for, and obtain, board certification in a specific specialty.

The goal of the CMHS Graduate Medical Education (residency) program is to train outstanding physicians that work in a collaborative environment across specialties and give back to the communities where they work and live. CMHS offers residency programs in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, and Orthopaedic Surgery.

The Orthopaedic Surgery program is led by program co-directors Thomas Golden, MD and G. Dennis Horvath, DO The program has initial accreditation with ACGME and AOA accreditation, and is designed to prepare residents for the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopaedic Surgery certification examination and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery board exam. The program was founded on the values of compassion, quality, integrity, and teamwork, and fosters and environment that includes excellent teaching and scholarly research, with a focus on patient care.

The CMHS General Surgery residency program emphasizes building academically strong surgeons with critical thinking skills and the procedural expertise to care for a variety of patients with diverse diagnosis. Led by Javier Romero, MD, the program focuses on a range of surgical procedures including abdominal, endocrine, and breast surgery; robotic surgery and GI endoscopy. General Surgery Residents also gain experience in anesthesia, vascular, and cardiothoracic surgery.

Led by Program Director Michelle Daucett, DO, the CMHS Family Medicine residency program has continued accreditation with ACGME and AOA accreditation. The three-year training program is built on a competency-based curriculum and offers residents in-hospital rotation experience as well as Community Medicine rotation experience. The Family Medicine residency offers many opportunities for one-on-one faculty instruction to help our residents build the skills necessary to succeed in the community practice of family medicine. Integrated with the CMHS Family Medicine residency program is a new Behavioral Health program led by Ronda Doonan, PsyD.

Internal Medicine residents at CMHS are given the opportunity to learn medicine in a small collegial environment that emphasizes academic excellence while fostering strong diagnostic and treatment skills. Led by Program Director Deborah Carlson, MD, the program faculty includes a diverse group of attending physicians with a wide breadth of experience and dedication to teaching. The CMHS Internal Medicine residency program has initial accreditation with ACGME and AOA, provides experience in both the in-patient and out-patient setting, and prepares residents for the the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine and American Board of Internal Medicine board exams.
